Quite simply ....

... sweet.

Karmasurfer just bought the above beauty yesterday. It's a 20-inch Mossberg 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, and I'd just like to offer a little friendly advice: If (when) you ravening hordes from New Jersey and New York come sniffing around our place looking to steal stuff, because the economy has tanked and you've been a grasshopper rather than an ant, you're liable to encounter a rather unwelcoming response. Specifically, all the King's Men won't be able to put you back together again.

The K-man first tested the new weapon with its stock grip on. He blew away his target from 30 or 40 yards, and this is with birdshot, mind you.

Then he put the hand grip on. Trust me: You can point the weapon anywhere in Joe Intruder's direction, and he (and the entire wall behind him) will be vaporized. Walls can be fixed. Mr. Intruder never will be.

Karmasurfer and I have been trying every way we know how to urge people to PREPARE for a time when you've got to rely on the food and water you've saved and your own wits. We believe it's coming very soon, and so do a whole lot of other folks. The economic meltdown is only a sign of the times.

So ... hence the introduction of the blunt-speaking Mr. Mossberg into our home. Me, I think he's awesome ;)

Ah, I love to hear conservatives talking about an economic meltdown. They wouldn't listen to this 'leftist lacking Common Sense' before. Now they're forced to acknowledge it, but of course it wasn't their government overspending and giving all that taxpayer money to the wealthy. It was Democrats lending it to the poor!

A shotgun to shoot burglars! And you're preaching about people lacking Common Sense. Guess it takes all sorts.

berko wills,

I've never blamed the current financial climate on Democrats "taxing the poor." I place the blame for this mess squarely on the shoulders of presidents and Congressmen/women past and present, from BOTH parties. The crisis has been building for decades, ever since such a thing as "sub-prime" mortgages was ever allowed in the first place. Since then, elected officials of all stripes have been winking at that particular market because it was a money-maker.

As for shotguns to shoot burglars, hell, yes. If someone sneaks into my house in the middle of the night, and it's dark, and I'm groggy, my aim with a handgun is not going to be the best, and it's only one bullet. A short-barreled shotgun is your best guarantor you're going to stop the threat, by virtue of its wide field of fire -- not as wide as longer-barreled guns -- but a lot more maneuverable, and with a wide enough field to ensure you hit the target.

That's my version of common sense, anyway. Perhaps in yours, every gun owner hits such targets with a handgun accurately every time.

KT, right on! :)

No, you make your point well. It got me thinking while reading your reply, that while I've handled a range of firearms myself, I haven't had occasion to shoot for many years. And I'm thankful for that.

It doesn't come into our equation here. Though we lock the doors and keep a bit of an ear out for noises.

You're right in that regard, if your shot's not going to be guaranteed, better off with a shotgun, which will hit enough of the target to take them down.

I trust in a four-be-two under the bed; bit heavier than a baseball bat and likely to immobilise the intruder faster. Plus you're more likely to knock them out, giving you time to tie them up and call the police. Not the thief I'm worried about, but I don't want to go to court and be forced to defend something which is every household's given right. So at least if their alive I've got a chance of the cops carting him away with a friendly wave.
Splattered on our porch, not so much and who cleans up the mess.

That's me and I live elsewhere. So far so good.

I'm "glad" to see you're even handed about the reasons for the crisis, though I can't see that any lesson it may impart as worth the (further) pain it will cause. The markets look like they're already recovering, if jittery, and there's enough industry - including new markets opening up - to give hope.

If fat is pulled from fire then I just hope every one thinks long and hard about what brought them to the brink.

berko wills, thanks for your very well-thought-out reply. I think you and I probably see things pretty much the same way, but, perhaps, from different lenses.

Conservatives tend to be accused of being "black-and-white" thinkers, and rightly so. And, in the case of this particular conversation -- home defense -- it may seem as if I'm opting into the "cowboy" mode. That is, shoot first, and ask questions later, etc.

I see this from two sides.

The first is the point of view of the burglar.

There are many reasons for burgling, pretty much all of them devoted to survival. We ALL have a need to survive. As such, burglars resort to the only method they seem to know for getting the money they need to survive, which is stealing my stuff. (Which I've worked for, sweated for, carefully saved, etc.)

Now -- it may seem obnoxiously black-and-white, conservative, testosterone-laden, gun-toting, I-hate-you distressing that I might object to someone stealing my stuff. Because I don't buy into the "as a burglar, I'm a pitiable specimen of humanity" argument.

And, if the "black-and-white" label were to be applied to me in this case, I plead guilty.

Because we are ALL responsible for our OWN lives. Joe Intruder knows the risks of entering my home. (Mr. Mossberg might be on patrol.)

...............

Sometimes, black-and-white is the main template for understanding life.

"Sometimes?" MOST of the time. You must have a frame of reference to come home to when you're wandering tangents. William of Ockham. (Please Google.)

(Hoping that makes sense.)

And thanking you, once again. It is nice to be able to share thoughts without inhabiting the automatic template of "conservate=enemy, liberal=enemy" limited mindset.

KT -- Wow.

Thanks for that link.

People around the world are seeing the writing on the wall.
